Pocket Kodak

Kodak Pocket Nr. 1

"Nr-1 Pocket Kodak, Series II" is written on the baseboard label. This one is manufactured in Canada by Canadian Kodak Company in Toronto. Produced 1922-1932.
The camera uses 120 film and it has an autographic back which means that it is a data back of the Twenties. You open the back door and do your engravings.
The lens is a simple meniskus (I think) and the shutter is Kodex Nr 0, T, B, 1/25, 1/50sec. Iris and the shutter are in front of the lens

You can see the grey patches on the bellows. They are not fungus but for some reason the coloring has loosen. The skin is excellent given that the camera is about eighty years old.

Looking at these two cameras you can see about a 1/200 of the various types of the folding cameras manufactured by Kodak from the late 19th to the middle of the 20th century.

But where is the lens? There is just a gaping round hole with no glass visible. Inside the hole, you can see the blades of the aperture diaphragm and the shutter but not the lens?. The lens is hidden behind the shutter. A quite common "arrangement" in those days.

Folding Hawkeye

Folding Cartridge Hawkeye (1926 - 1934)

"Nr-2 Folding Cartridge Hawkeye , Model B", again on the label. This Kodak is manufactured in U.S.A. by Eastman Kodak Co. Rochester, N. Y. The format is the same. The lens is Anastigmat Kodeye , 1:6,3 and the shutter is also Kodex Nr. 0 as in Kodak Pocket above.
The camera uses 120 film and the picture size 6 x9cm. This time there is no "data back"

I purchased this Hawkeye on eBay, Switzerland and It´s condition is like new. This is not exceptional and it is not hard to find surprisingly well preserwed old Kodak cameras.
I wonder what might be the condition of a modern snapshooter after eighty years.

Kodak Hawk-Eye cameras are inexpensive enougn for almost any purse, yet complete and proficient in every respect. There is a handy scale which gives adjustments for various distances. But the lens can also be set so that the camera may be used as a "fixed-focus" outfit, but this is only one instance of the camera's versatility. The brilliant View Finder can be set for either horizontal or vertical views. The Kodex Shutter, with snapshot speeds of 1/25 and 1/50 second, besides bulb and time, makes possible a variety of exposures to fit various light conditions. Exposures are made either with a lever or with the cable release supplied with each camera. The cameras are covered with fine grain black imitation leather, handsomely embossed. Exposed metal parts, are trimmed in durable black crystal lacquer, nickel and brass. In short the Hawk-Eyes are built and equipped to make good pictures, and they are finished to present an appearance that is to be expected in a much higher priced Camera. All H awk-Eye Cameras are Eastman made from lens to lock. That fact insures quality material and workmanship and what is still more important, good pictures.
